Father of the Bride
Dan, a soon-to-be retired actuary, enjoys hikes, bikes and kayaking. (Once, while kayaking off Long Beach Island, Dan discovered a small island covered with seagulls and thoughtfully named it ‘Gull Island’.)
Though he will most likely spend his retirement doing these things, he also claims he’ll finally clean the basement. When Dan is not out enjoying the great outdoors, he can usually be found sitting in a chair playing spider solitaire.
Dan sets off on an expedition, much like his long-ago family member Elisha Kent Kane, the famous Arctic explorer:
Janine O’Mara Kane
Mother of the Bride
“Momala” “Mumsie Dearest”
Janine (unlike Dan) will likely never retire from her job in HR. She also loves to sing. She’s in the choir and cantors at her church and sings with the Triad Vocal Ensemble.
When Janine isn’t working or singing, she is the Oprah of the Kane family, seeking out her annual favorite things and giving one to everyone. She carries a giant bag of catalogs wherever she goes to aid in this process.
Some of Janine’s favorite things:
Mother of the Groom
Jackie recently retired from many years as a preschool aide to supervise her giant St. Bernard, Samantha. She now works full time vacuuming dog hair.
When she’s not managing large canines, Jackie enjoys going to the theater and the Baltimore Symphony Orchestra. She also hails from Baltimore, and though she always tries to hide it, that long “O” slips into her accent from time to time.
John Conrad Smith
Father of the Groom
John was a building contractor by profession and a builder by trade. He built most of Aaron’s childhood home by himself (with some assistance from Jackie) and later built a playhouse, an elaborate swingset and a barn. He was an excellent woodworker, a mediocre golfer and a great dad.
He and Dan would’ve gotten along well talking about their right-leaning politics while the rest of us ignored them.
Here’s film of John playing football in high school taken by Aaron’s grandfather:
